SOFY, one of alt-pop’s most vital voices, continues to impress with her ever-evolving creativity. Her latest offering, the 9-track mixtape Chaos & Commotion, is a testament to the tumultuous journey she’s navigated over the past year and a half. In this body of work, SOFY takes us on a compelling ride, spanning from dizzying heights of love to the depths of despair, from peaks of self-assuredness to valleys of introspection. This emotional rollercoaster is beautifully portrayed in the songs leading up to the mixtape’s release, such as “socks,” and the follow-up singles “supermarket” and “WET PAINT” all of which have collectively garnered thousands of streams and many praises..
Reflecting on the project, SOFY describes it as a time capsule. Her ever-shifting headspace is vividly portrayed, with no two songs on this record sounding alike. Chaos & Commotion exudes a newfound confidence and an adventurous spirit that goes beyond her previous work, seamlessly incorporating a wide range of musical influences. The chameleonic tendencies of SOFY demonstrated within the project is not only confirmation of SOFY’s prowess as a modern day storyteller but also sonic acrobat with elasticity to span a multitude of genres at such a credible level. As she shares,“each song expresses a different part of me and the rollercoaster period of time that this record represents; falling in love one moment and out of love the next, going from feeling like I’m on top of the world to feeling like the world is moving without me, frustration and hope and anger and humour. I’ve lived, breathed and been totally engrossed in this world for the last year, so I just hope everyone straps in and enjoys the ride with me.”
Leading the charge, single “YoYo” couldn’t be anymore aptly titled as a reflection of this journey she narrates within the project. Sonically, however, it opens up a new door for SOFY. With a chorus of anthemic potential, the 3 minute offering delves into a darker, edgier soundscape with the aid of a thrashy guitar riffs and slurry vocals. A track made for those gigs where your feet stick to the floor. In her own words, SOFY expands; “It definitely feels like an evolution of my sound, so I immediately wanted it to be Track 1 on the mixtape because it’s a bit of a statement – “welcome to the chaos and commotion era, keep your arms and legs inside the ride and please fasten your seatbelts!!”
SOFY’s Chaos & Commotion represents a significant milestone as her inaugural project under the banner of the esteemed independent record label, Chess Club Records, a label also homing the success stories of Alfie Templeman, Pixey, Coach Party, and Lip Filler. This collaboration was a stroke of genius, coming on the heels of SOFY’s remarkable debut at Glastonbury and her presence at eight other prominent festivals across Europe during her first tour, last summer. 2022 also saw SOFY selling out three headline shows in London, including the illustrious 600-capacity Lafayette venue. Notably, her single “Big Talk” secured a coveted spot on the FIFA 23 soundtrack, sharing the spotlight with renowned artists like FKA Twigs and Rosalía, and it has since amassed an astounding 5 million+ streams on DSP’s and an additional 1 million on YouTube.
2023 has seen even more excitement build around SOFY, from supporting Australian viral sensation Tash Sultana in her home county of Leicester, to touring the entirety of the UK with one of the buzziest bands on the ground right now 49th & Main. Bolstering SOFY’s journey is the steadfast support of BBC Radio 1. Passionate supporters of SOFY, the station, have championed every live release of the Chaos & Commotionmixtape, homing the premieres of “socks”, “supermarket”, “Ashley Cole Type Beat”, “WET PAINT” and lead single “YoYo” on their Future Pop show. The tracks also welcomed additional R1 spins from Jack Saunders, Maia Beth, Nels Hylton, Alyx Holcombe, Gemma Bradley, Jess Iszatt and more.
In just a matter of weeks, SOFY is poised to embark on her inaugural UK headline tour, with scheduled stops in key cities such as Glasgow, Leeds, Nottingham, Bristol, Manchester, and her hometown of Leicester. Notably, she is reserving a special place for her London audience, where she will host an intimate three-night residency at The Grace, providing a tantalizing preview of what is set to be an exceptionally thrilling live performance calendar for London in 2024. It is undeniable that SOFY has cemented her status as a rising star, one that warrants vigilant attention not only in 2023 but also in the years that lie ahead.
