Arlo Parks has released her debut book, THE MAGIC BORDER: Poetry And Fragments From My Soft Machine, published by Harper Collins Publishing. The book consists of 20 brand new poems as well as the lyrics from her recent sophomore album, My Soft Machine, and new exclusive images by Daniyel Lowden.

Parks’ music and lyrical prose have received high praise from the likes of The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard etc. With her debut book, fellow musician Florence Welch has described Arlo’s writing as, “poetry you can taste,” with Katie Gavin of MUNA adding, “Arlo Parks pulls beauty around her as a war tactic, and she shares the spoils with us. I am grateful and invigorated.”

Arlo will be hosting a poetry reading to share excerpts from the book in conversation with Clairo at The Great Hall at Cooper Union on October 4th in NY and in conversation with Lucy Dacus at Zipper Hall at Colburn School of Music in LA on October 10th.

Arlo shares about her writing process and what THE MAGIC BORDER means to her noting, “Writing poetry, to me, is about profound interiority. It is about wading into the saltwater of your own body, capillaries bursting, eyes brimming, unmoored. This collection is the fruit of that inner probing. It is a tangled mass of everything that has made me angry or giddy or low or impossibly happy to be alive. It has taken me almost twenty-three years to share my poetry beyond a few trusted friends. Poetry was my place, my little clearing in the forest, where I could quietly put everything I was holding. I’m not sure what gave me the courage to open up that space to you but here I am, doing it. I am proud to show you this personal lens that life shimmers through. This book is no longer mine. It is yours.

THE MAGIC BORDER follows Arlo’s new album album My Soft Machine released earlier this year. The album serves as a testament to Arlo Parks’ artistic evolution, highlighting her unique storytelling prowess and introspective lyricism. The album, recorded across London and Los Angeles, boasts an impressive array of producers, including Paul Epworth, Ariel Rechtshaid, Romil Hemnani (of Brockhampton), Buddy Ross (known for collaborations with Frank Ocean), Carter Lang (known for work with SZA), and self-production by Arlo herself. Leading up to its release, Arlo graced the covers of Paste Magazine, GQ Hype, The Guardian Film & Music, DORK, MusicWeek, DIY, and Gay Times. This follows her highly acclaimed debut album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, which garnered two Grammy nominations, a BRIT Award, the Honda Mercury Prize, and the BBC Introducing Artist Of The Year Award, as well as chart success and recognition for her advocacy work with UNICEF and CALM, the UK mental health charity.
