FAITH IN THE UNKNOWN OUT NOVEMBER 7TH VIA LEX RECORDS
Brussels-based artist and producer Shungu shares “Last Time” featuring Liv.e, the latest single from his forthcoming album. Sparse, yet intricately arranged to waft through a late night jazz lounge, the new single’s production offers another glimpse at the producer’s expansive signature sound he’s showcasing on his new album Faith in the Unknown, out November 7th via Lex Records. This time working with critically-acclaimed artist Liv.e, Shungu creates vacant spaces in the track for her unique voice to fill and reverberate throughout. “Last Time” follows previously-released singles, the G Funk-inspired “Talk to the Mass” featuring Fly Anakin, Goya Gumbani, and Fatima, and the bracing “Stay Alive” featuring Pink Siifu.
“I was honoured and blessed to co-produce a few tracks on Liv.e’s Couldn’t Wait to Tell You…, I already knew her music, but that’s how I truly connected with her,” Shungu says of Liv.e. “She’s the kind of artist who makes it meaningful for me to keep making music in a world that is changing so fast. There aren’t many artists who resonate with my own vision of sound the way she does, and I feel blessed that we are able to communicate through music.”
Shungu is also announcing a series of European live shows this November. He’ll be playing shows across London, Berlin, Brussels and Amsterdam throughout the month. Tickets are available HERE.
Faith in the Unknown was crafted with Shungu’s curatorial vision to capture a community of voices, energies and sensibilities on record that inspire him. Frequent collaborators and newer faces come together to form that community, including Pink Siifu, Liv.e, Navy Blue, Maxo, dreamcastmoe, Fly Anakin, Goya Gumbani, Fatima, Chester Watson, Ruqqiyah, and ZEKEULTRA.
“The process of making this album took time, and it grew into something very human, rooted in trust, patience and creative risk,” Shungu explains. “It’s also a kind of introduction to a scene I feel close to, a space where experimentation meets vulnerability. I hope the record resonates beyond the surface and invites people to reflect, feel, and question. These songs are conversations, not just between me and the artists, but between worlds, eras, and ways of feeling.”
Shungu has carved out a singular space for himself as an innovative, revered voice in the underground hip-hop landscape, blending jazz-infused sampling with cosmic grooves, along with establishing a Detroit-indebted house alter ego Senga. That personality and distinct ear for instrumentals has cultivated a sense of community across his records with the likes of Pink Siifu, Fly Anakin, YUNGMORPHEUS and more finding a home in his beats. The Belgian producer has served as an accomplished custodian of this community for years, playing the role of an artist who is both deeply rooted in the underground scene and a pioneering force in driving it forward. Shungu’s critically acclaimed debut album A Black Market Album was described by Pitchfork as “perfectly chosen drums and subtle swagger, reminiscent of nothing so much as golden-age Slum Village and other pre-Donuts J. Dee classics.”
