From Piano Prodigy to Dub Collaboration: A Musical Journey
From classical beginnings to deep dub explorations, Pharma Phil has always been driven by a passion for sound. His musical journey began at the age of six, when he first sat down at a piano and discovered a love for music that has stayed with him ever since. Throughout his school years, music was his defining talent, culminating in the highest possible grade (A) in his GCSE Music exam—an achievement made all the more remarkable considering he initially chose the class simply to avoid sports.
By the age of seventeen, he had passed Grade 8 in clarinet, further expanding his musical repertoire. Over the years, his fascination with sound and rhythm continued to evolve, leading him beyond classical instruments into more experimental and genre-blending projects.
One genre that has always resonated deeply with him is dub. Dub is a genre of music that started in Jamaica in the late 1960s as an offshoot of reggae. It’s known for its heavy basslines, echoing effects, and stripped-down instrumental tracks. Producers like King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry used the mixing board creatively—adding reverb, delay, and other effects to transform simple reggae tracks into atmospheric soundscapes.
That passion led him to collaborate with Ras Ray, a fellow artist who shares the same deep-rooted appreciation for the genre. Their connection was serendipitous—both had attended Lee “Scratch” Perry shows in the past, long before they ever met. Discovering this shared experience felt like fate, solidifying their creative partnership and inspiring them to craft something together.
Their new dub track is the result of that connection—a tribute to the spirit of Lee “Scratch” Perry and the deep, rolling energy of classic dub. It blends their influences, celebrating the timeless sound that has shaped their musical identities.
