“Mellow and delicate throughout, “Tonight” signals exactly what this new direction is about” – COMPLEX UK
In just six months, London-born, Belgium-based artist BEX has achieved what many can only dream of in years. A true artist of the world, shaped by an early life across multiple continents, BEX’s rapid ascent has already captivated audiences globally. From his East London roots to formative years in Botswana and Brunei, BEX’s multicultural upbringing permeates his sound, resulting in a universally relatable artistry that transcends borders. Homing a genre-defying style, his seamless blend of introspective lyricism, acoustic melodies, and global rhythms, places him among the most compelling new voices of his generation, with the imminency of buzz surrounding BEX being no coincidence.
“Tonight is about the self-conflict of still wanting to be there for someone (an ex) who you know should have already moved on from,” BEX shares, offering an emotionally charged narrative at the core of the new track.
With a sound that blends indie, R&B, rap, and acoustic elements, BEX appeals to a broad demographic of ‘individual’ who crave authenticity. Drawing inspiration from icons like Michael Jackson, Post Malone, and The Weeknd, BEX is determined to carve out his own legacy. “I want to create a project like this,” he says, alluding to a forthcoming body of work that will further explore his acoustically led universe. “I’m leaning into this new version of me”. The EP will arrive as his first formal project offering, consisting of 5 acoustic-leaning tracks, revealing BEX in his purest form.
With incredible organic growth, over 160K followers on Instagram, 158K on TikTok, and an astounding average of 100K views per reel, his authentic digital presence is undeniable. Spotify has also recognised his potential, featuring him on editorial playlists like ‘New Pop Picks’, ‘New in R&B’, and ‘Young X Dazed’. Leading the charge into the EP, single “Grow Ill” cusped the end of 2024 and surpassed 400K streams within its first month, a remarkable feat given the competitive holiday period.
BEX’s journey began in Hackney, where he was born into a creatively driven household. With a multi-instrumentalist mother and a DJ father, music was more than a pastime—it was a way of life. “My mum was heavy on sending me to dance lessons, the choir, and piano lessons until I was six or seven years old,” he recalls. “Music was all around the household.”
As a pre-teen, BEX relocated to Botswana, where he immersed himself in Murumba bands and mastered the recorder and flute. “It was mandatory in school, but I enjoyed it and therefore took it to the next level,” he says. His passion for rhythm and melody deepened when he began classical guitar training during secondary school in Brunei. “I’ve learned so much about rhythm and percussion,” he notes. “I’m very conscious of melody, harmony, and chords now because I’m so comfortable with the rhythm.”
These formative experiences, spanning multiple continents, have endowed BEX with a uniquely global understanding.
Since settling in Belgium, BEX has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. His 2023 breakout singles, “Forgiato” and “Seventeen,” have collectively garnered over 600,000 streams, partnered with huge live performances alongside prominent artists like M Huncho and Russ further solidified his reputation as a compelling live act.
A pivotal moment came earlier this year during a trip to Tenerife, where he experienced a creative epiphany. This led to the creation of the acoustically driven hit “Miss Me (Bad Vibes)” which marked a new chapter in his artistry. Teased on Instagram and TikTok, the track quickly gained traction, amassing over 10 million views on reels alone. Upon its official release, the single garnered widespread acclaim, contributing to BEX’s current Spotify listener count of over 300,000 monthly listeners.Following the success of “Miss Me (Bad Vibes),” BEX returned with “Uptown” in October, a tender, acoustically led track which he co-produced alongside Alexis Seys. With over 3 million streams to date, the track showcases BEX’s growth as a songwriter and his ability to capture universal themes of love and vulnerability. “Talking about love feels good as it’s honest for me right now” he reflects.
