Moses Sumney shares a new version of “Hey Girl” from his critically acclaimed 2024 EP Sophcore. His first musical offering of 2025, “Hey Girl(s)” features contributions from acclaimed singer Syd and musician and poet Meshell Ndegeocello, the latter of which Moses cited as one of his influences in his Lampoon Magazine cover story. Together, the artists build on the sensual foundation of “Hey Girl” and perfectly complement Moses’ songwriting and impeccable vocal range.

Fresh off her second consecutive Grammy win for Best Alternative Jazz Album this Sunday, Ndegeocello shared, “I was excited when Moses thought of me for this song because I love his voice, it’s just otherworldly, and this song spoke to me because of the way he pushes a romantic narrative into the future. It was a pleasure to get a glimpse into his process and an honor to be part of it.”

This past August, Moses released Sophcore, his first body of original music since his critically acclaimed double album græ in 2020. The EP features the previously released singles “Vintage” and “Gold Coast” and showcases Sumney’s continued musical evolution, highlighting more overt R&B influences and the singular voice on which he’s built his career. The project received critical acclaim, landing spots on NPR, Paste Magazine, and Pitchfork’s Best Songs of 2024 lists. Offering insight into the body of work Sumney shares, “Sophcore explores the meeting points between sensuality and intuition … esotericism and populism … deep feeling and fun. It’s diving into subterranean rhythm, bass and drums, and making music for the hips as well as the heart.”

The EP arrived on the heels of Sumney being announced as the face of Rabanne’s Million Gold fragrance and rounded out a Summer in which he starred in MaXXXine, A24’s Ti West-directed horror film, alongside Mia Goth, Kevin Bacon, Halsey and more. The new single follows the announcement of Sumney’s casting in Public Theatre’s TWELFTH NIGHT as Feste. He will be joining an acclaimed ensemble consisting of Lupita Ny’ongo, Sandra Oh, Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, among others. Directed by Tony-award nominee Saheem Ali, the production will run from August 21st to September 14th.
