Peckham’s finest Kwengface releases comeback EP, Victim of Circumstance. The highly anticipated project sees Kwengface contextualize his realities, offering full transparency across 7-tracks that are equal parts reflective and motivational. Kwengface’s potent cadence allows listeners to latch onto his every word, as he delivers each lyric with an experienced realism that transcends artist to consumer.
The project mirrors that of a diary entry, relatable even if not endured by those who consume it. Having mastered a signature drill aesthetic, the South London native displays fiery sonics in “Ready Set Go” and “2 Conspiracies,” where he talks about the trials and tribulations of his time in prison. His previously released single, “2 Summers,” is a testament to growth and resilience, as he steps into a sound that mirrors the evolution of his mind and spirit. Keeping all eyes and ears on his personal and musical reinvention, he opts for minimal features other than Jungle, whom he met while incarcerated, on the eerie heater “Monstrocity.” The penultimate track on Victim Of Circumstance, “Parallel Theory,” poignantly displays Kwengface’s innocence, his imagination, and ability to paint an array of “what ifs” atop a wistfully laced production. Taking listeners back to day one, he enlisted producers Mikey, Stryder, and Deekay.
Hailing from South London, Kwengface began rapping and writing lyrics at just 12 years old. As a core member of the Drill collective Zone 2, he quickly gained recognition for his high-energy delivery, razor-sharp bars, and clever punchlines. Kweng solidified his place in the UK Drill scene with the release of “3 Stripes” in 2018—a track that remains a cornerstone of the genre. His ascent wasn’t without challenges. The controversial single “No Censor” was pulled from YouTube, leading to cancelled shows and an injunction that forced him to reconsider his future in music. Yet, Kwengface proved resilient. By 2021, he reached a turning point with his debut mixtape YPB: Tha Come Up and a “Plugged In” freestyle that went viral, amassing over 13 million views. The momentum continued in 2022, a standout year marked by the release of his acclaimed mixtape YPB: The Archive, a memorable performance at the Size Sessions Festival, and a high-profile collaboration with Knucks on his three-part single Daily Duppy.
In March 2023, Kwengface had a defining cultural moment when he revealed his identity for the first time on COLORS, captivating fans and breaking boundaries. But behind the scenes, the moment was bittersweet—while the world celebrated, Kweng was behind bars, a stark reminder of the dualities that have shaped his journey. Not letting anything get in his way in 2024, he dropped the 14-track project A Gangster’s Holiday, packed with A-list collaborations. Over the years, he has worked with heavyweights like Dizzee Rascal, Knucks, Digga D, Tiggs Da Author, Marnz Malone, George The Poet, and Backroad Gee. After a brief hiatus from releases, he makes a defining return for Kwengface to mark a moment that fans near and far have eagerly anticipated. Looking at the body of work, as well as the passion, endurance, and intention behind the Kwengface of today, the future is bright for the South London MC.
