One of bass music’s most compelling new talents supports Sammy Virji @ O2 Brixton Academy tonight!
Amsterdam-based JAEL continues his journey through the bass music spectrum on his forthcoming EP, Motion Sickness, “a cocktail of garage, 140 and deep bass”, out January 31st via Mena Muria Records – the same day he supports UKG hero Sammy Virji at Brixton’s O2 Academy in London.
“Motion Sickness is a return to my roots—a 4-track journey into the pulse of UK bass and garage,” says JAEL, real name Giovanni Jano. “This EP isn’t just music; it’s a reconnection with the sounds I grew up on, reimagined through a fresh lens. I can’t wait for you to hear my new sounds!”
Focus track ‘Motion Sickness’ sees the Moluccan talent supply a skippy sub-heavy UKG beat, overlaid with the lyrical bombs of Ghanaian-born rapper Michael Ekow. The EP also features November’s single ‘D33P’, a choppy dubstep track that made a real impact in JAEL’s sets last year. Then there’s the wobbly bassline-laden ‘Rude Boy’, and the anthemic leftfield garage track ‘You Be There’, which focuses around a central flickering, gated vocal sample.
Once known for his work as an R&B artist, JAEL has transitioned into electronic music, crafting bass-heavy productions infused with the soulful essence of his roots. Raised in a household steeped in Moluccan Folk, Gospel, Soul, Funk, and Japanese Funk, this rich musical heritage has shaped his genre-blending sound and dynamic performances. His debut 2021 album, Half As Much, and his collaboration with Juls on ‘Close to Me’ featuring Wizkid and Agent Sasco, further cemented his international reputation.
A long-time member of Soulection, Giovanni Jano has toured extensively across South Africa, Asia, Australia, and beyond, earning global recognition with standout performances at London’s Boiler Room Festival (AMS) and O2 Brixton – as well as holding down a radio show, CAROUSEL JAEL, on the legendary Rinse FM.
2025 promises to be pivotal for JAEL, with Motion Sickness set to be the next chapter for one of bass music’s most compelling new talents.
