PREVIOUS SUPPORT IN SPOTIFY’S ‘NEW POP UK’, ‘R&B UK’, ‘THE GOLD LIST’ + COVER OF ‘FRESH FINDS UK & IE’ PLAYLIST
Arriving fresh off the release of “Bittersweet”, UK trailblazer Mariella has shared the highly anticipated release of her debut EP ‘Deeper Than You’. Gaining over 1 million streams independently with only a handful of releases behind her, not to mention support from key tastemakers including BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, Arielle Free and Victoria Jane, this seamless body of work continues to solidify her one-to-watch status.
Whilst Mariella remains an emerging R&B-Soul powerhouse in the UK, she eloquently nods to her formative songwriting years of listening to Folk and Indie bands and playing in ensembles as well as the R&B/Soul classics that have all inspired her unique hybrid sound. Spread across 4 releases, ‘Deeper Than You’ is a candid journey that follows a young woman in her twenty-somethings navigating life’s intricacies. Named after the project’s final track “Passing By” which opens with the lyric “I know I think, a little deeper than you”, ‘Deeper Than You’ was written and produced over the course of 18 months alongside producer duo Jordan Timms and Max Smith at their studio in Surrey.
Welcomed with the up-beat sounds of “Reach You”, we find ourselves submerged in the captivating “Deja Vu”, and euphoric “Bittersweet” before stumbling into the brand-new track “Passing By”. Posing as the ultimate break-up anthem, Mariella is forced to face reality and come to accept that her ex-lover is just another chapter in what’s set to be an incredible story. Enriched with a sense of freedom, the singer-songwriter is liberating her audience to wipe away their woes and continue to strive for greatness.
When asked about the meaning behind the EP, Mariella explained, “From a young age, being sensitive and emotional was something that I felt quite ashamed of. I was a child who felt emotion very intensely, and often labelled as “too emotional” or a “cry baby” – I didn’t know how to process or express what I was feeling, and no one ever taught me. Although the feelings don’t get lighter with age, I’ve learnt ways to self-soothe, cope & control the intense feelings better.
This collection of songs are written from that place of emotional vulnerability. Processing the pitfalls of relationships and life in real-time, from the lens of a soft sensitive person, by turning them into meaningful pieces of music. It’s a personal validation that I am a deep thinker & feeler, and that’s ok – I’m not alone.”
