Afro‑Scandi Pop Gets Supercharged with Tolou’s Radiant New Single
Norwegian-Nigerian pop artist Tolou has today released her new single Energy and its accompanying video, directed by Edgar Esteves. Energy is the follow up to previous single Lose My Mind, which was released in August.
Speaking about her new single, Energy, Tolou says:
“Energy is a song about presence and connection – when the energy speaks first, when the spark is undeniable, and you answer it with confidence by saying what you want.”
Tolou’s genre-blending sound, which she calls Afro-Scandi Pop, fuses the cool, atmospheric textures of her former home Tromsø, with the vibrant rhythms and textures of her African heritage. Her voice moves effortlessly between soul, pop, and gospel, but her music is about more than sound. The name Tolou, meaning “sunrise” in Nigerian, reflects Tolou’s musical identity perfectly – her music is about light, and joy, especially in moments when those things feel distant.
Tolou’s music is shaped by diverse influences, from Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Burna Boy, Robyn, Dua Lipa, and Bruno Mars, to Tolou’s greatest inspirations, Rihanna, and Beyoncé. She has starred in the Norwegian drama series Saving the F* Planet, collaborated with fashion brands including Hugo Boss, L’Oreal, and H&M, and played a number of big festival dates last summer, including Norway’s Oya.
Tolou’s new single Energy is out now and she will be releasing further new music in the coming weeks.
