DEBUT ALBUM SWEET TOOTH DUE SEPTEMBER 19TH VIA DRINK SUM WTR
ANNOUNCES NY ALBUM RELEASE SHOW
Today, Halima returns with “eau de vie,” an intimate anthem that’s all breath and yearning. The new track follows the official announcement of her debut album, SWEET TOOTH, arriving September 19 via drink sum wtr and comes alongside a Alex Kumph-directed video featuring Halima in a surreal black and white universe. Alongside the new single Halima is announcing her headline NY album release show on October 7th at Night Club 101. Halima will also be performing at Café Erzulie this evening alongside Bathe.
Speaking about “eau de vie,” Halima shares, “I’ve always been drawn to surrealism. For ‘eau de vie,’ I wanted to make something sonically abstract exist in a liminal space. Alex, the director, builds these incredible 3D worlds, so he was the perfect person to imagine that world with me.
‘eau de vie’ translates to ‘water of life’. For a while, we debated shooting me in a water tank or some obscure body of water, but everything felt either too expensive or too flat. Then we thought: what if we imagined a world that only exists inside your mind? There’s beauty in that internal space…but also a kind of worship. Eventually, you realize you’re in an echo chamber, which is exactly what we created.
The multiplication of myself in the video leans into that idea. It’s the inner dialogue made visible – an emotional loop you can’t quite escape.
We wanted to weave together Afro-futurism with the nostalgic feeling of 90s-era Sade and Aaliyah, artists whose videos translated classic ballads in such a warm, cinematic way, you wanted to live inside them. That’s kind of what it feels like when you dress love up in delusion.”
Framed as one long night out – from twilight anticipation to the quiet clarity of sunrise – SWEET TOOTH is a cinematic debut tracing years of self-discovery and emotional reckoning. The album includes previous single / video “cocoa body,” a hot and hazy dance club track with choreography by Roy Garzon and Jordan Kaya. Across the album, Halima creates a world where sultry club bangers meet deep ballads, in a hybrid of honeyed Afro-pop and scorched R&B. Not genre-less – but genre-full!
Halima co-produced the album with a sharp range of producers, including Mikey Freedom Hart (A$AP Rocky, Dev Hynes/Blood Orange, Empress Of), and the album explores desire, transformation, and the complexity of sweetness. “Sweetness on my terms,” Halima offers – a mantra for reclaiming softness without surrendering strength. “The album is about returning to yourself through chaos, and loving the parts of the journey that hurt – the pleasure and the pain”
Though SWEET TOOTH marks her full-length debut, Halima calls it an epilogue:
“Am I the person that I wanted to become? I think so. I’ve given myself permission to be bold, to be free. To take up space.”
SWEET TOOTH follows her XYZ EP and EXU, Halima’s first release via drink sum wtr, where she seamlessly wove together UK soul, Garage and experimental R&B.
